Shikuru came to talk to us about life in Tanzania.
Tanzania is in East Africa.

The main city is called Dar es Salaam
The main language in Tanzania is Swahili.
Her village is about 8 hours drive from the capital.
Her village is called Kondoa, her tribe is Warangi. Her tribal language is Kirangi
About 3,000 people live in Konda
A lot of people are unemployed in East Africa, they don’t have a lot of money and the government doesn’t help them.
They make things to sell.

African Culture
Music and dance are part of everyday life in Tanzania.
Men use drums often and the women dance.
Both men and women sit around and sing together.

Visual art is in their everyday lives in the form of jewellery.
The wear lots of bright beads, bangles and necklaces and some have a lot of body piercing.
Both men and women wear colourful kanga ( like sarongs)

They also make jandals from recycled tyres and make the colourful with beads

Room 1 Class Fair

On Wednesday 22nd September Room 1 children had a mini fair to raise money for the Y6 school camp. Everything was $1, 50c or 20c. We had books, toys and lots of yummy food to sell. We also had fun games like guess the lollies in the jar, throw the wet sponge, stick in the sand and kick the ball. We were really pleased to raise $500!! We learnt a lot about giving change and counting money. We are really looking forward to our school fair in October and hope to run the same games there.

Tamar Talks To Us About Life In A Kibbutz

Claire and her family lived in a Kibbutz in Israel. Her Great Grandfather helped establish the kibbutz when he left Russia. Their family has lived there ever since. It was one of the biggest in Israel with about 2000 people living in it. Life is very different on a kibbutz. Everything is shared and everyone works for the community. They grow all of their vegetables in the kibbutz, especially bananas. They have a supermarket the size of New World on the kibbutz. The school was there. You went from when you were 6 until you are 19. The school had bomb shelters where you had to go when the siren on the kibbutz went. Claire enjoyed going to the pool when she lived there.

Farewell to Katie and Charlotte

We were sad to farewell Katie and Charlotte who are returning to England. They have been at Macandrew Bay School since they were 6. We had a shared lunch and a movie as a farewell treat. We hope they keep in touch and keep looking on our blog to see what Room 1 is up to.

Water Tank for our School Garden

We have been excited to see our old Room1 designed water tanks replaced by a huge new tank. The plumber explained how the rainwater will be collected from the roof of the school pool and will fill the new tank. We can then use the water to water our school gardens. We felt proud that the idea was originally a Room 1 technology design and the school has decided it was a good way to recycle water and put in a new tank while the pool was having an upgrade. Now we just need some dry weather to try it out.

Drama

Every Friday we have been doing drama with Lyn Aldridge. We were looking at the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff. First we made a bridge which rattled and shook. Then the goats had to walk over the bridge and convince the trolls not to eat them. There was an argument and the goats and trolls ' attacked ' each other. Mother Goat wrote a letter to the judge. The jury needed to decide who was guilty - the trolls or the goats. Both groups put up strong arguments in court helped by their lawyers! In the end the judge gave the trolls community service.
It was a lot of fun .

Spelling Quiz

Three Macandrew Bay teams competed in the spelling quiz at Tahuna. There were about 90 teams there. The questions were quite hard and included current events spelling. We really enjoyed ourselves, especially eating the chocolate! Barney

Raising Funds for World Vision

On Friday the 20th May Room 1 raised money for the World Vision Famine Appeal. Each child brought money to donate. We cooked rice for morning tea and at lunchtime Shkuru , Hamish's Mum, came and cooked pilau for our lunch. Pilau is a dish they cook in Africa for special occasions. She fried rice, onion, garlic and spices and then added water. It was yummy.
Shkuru comes Tanzania. She told us that she was lucky as she only had to walk 10km to school each day. Some children had to walk 20km, they ran all of the way. They would stop at the river and drink the water. They didn't take lunch to school but sometimes they took beans or seeds. She has just been back to the school -they have 900 children in six classes. The children sit on the floor. Hamish and his family raised money to buy them books and pens. We felt very lucky to have enough food, water and good schooling!
Our class raised $583 for World Vision.

Beautifying Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust Nursery at Company Bay

On Wednesday the 19th of May Room 1 went to the Yellow Eyed Penguin Trust Nursery to paint wildlife images on the buildings.
First we designed our pictures, they were mainly of Yellow Eyed Penguins, albatrosses and some seals.
Next one of the Nursery volunteers, the two managers of the Nursery and the ranger
painted hills,sand,rocks,sky and sea.
After that it was time for the painting at the Nursery. First we did an outline in chalk, then we had morning tea, now it was time to put on the paint. We spent almost two and a half hours painting!
When we had finished it looked brilliant! The Nursery workers really liked the way it turned out.
We had so much fun!

On Friday 14th May Bradley, Felix, Connor, Liam, Charlotte, Katie, Samantha and Amber represented our school at Activ8 2010. It was held at Logan Park and the College of Education. We had to do a 2km obstacle run, team activities and a healthy eating/ sports quiz. We really enjoyed it and had a great time!

Lotions and Potions at the Otago Museum

We made elephant toothpaste at the Museum. We put in detergent , food colouring, hydrogen peroxide and yeast as ingredients. The yeast caused a chemical reaction and the mixture flowed out over the bottle and into the container. We had no elephants so we could not see if it worked!!
We also made lava lamps where we found out that oil always separates when mixed with water. We made cabbage indicators to help us find out if things were acid( the mixture turned pink) or alkaline( the mixture turned blue. We also made a volcano with mentos and coke, and cap rockets.
We had lots of fun and we learnt alot.

The Highlander

It is very important the Highlanders rugby team live healthy lives to play well. Some of the things we learnt were to drink lots of water, eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Always eat breakfast, lunch and tea. We also found out that it is good to stay active and always have fun!!

Making Hokey Pokey!

We made hokey pokey. We put in golden syrup and sugar. We heated the mixture and stirred it until the sugar dissolved. This was a physical change. Next we put in the baking soda. The mixture frothed up and rose. This was a chemical change. We put the mixture in a container and put it in the fridge to cool. This was a physical change. We learnt if you don't stir it the mixture will burn. This makes carbon!! It did not taste very nice!!The mixture that didn't burn was very yummy!!

Room 1 have been learning to swim in our school pool. We are learning to improve on our breathing and arm stroke. We are a lot better now that we have been practicing for three weeks.If we work hard we get a Friday fun day. Mrs Hawker and Mr Direen thank you for teaching us.

Room 1 made a Treaty for the class rules.Our class rules are about respect, taking responsibility for our belongings, our behaviour and our learning. The class rules are also about being independent classmembers.30 children signed the Room 1 Treaty. We signed it on the school flag.

We were really sad that our friend Shira sadly passed away on the first day of school this year. She had been fighting leukemia for four years. She had been at our school but had shifted to Christchurch to get the treatment she needed. Some of us went to Christchurch for her funeral.We will always remember her. Team Building Activity

We got into groups of three and one of us had a blindfold around our eyes. The other two had to take the blindfolded person across the playground and over obstacles. We had to trust the two people helping. It was really helpful when the people explained carefully how to get around the obstacles.

Our Fantastic Year 5 & 6 Class

This is our fantastic Year 5 and 6 class of 2010. There are 30 wonderful children in our class. Our teachers are Mrs Hawker and Mrs Newlands. Mr Direen is our trainee teacher for this year. We are excited about our Term 1 topic " What Causes Change?" where wwe will be doing lots of chemistry experiments!!!
To start the year we are finding out about how to be good friends and how to work as a team.
